This graph above shows the amount of time a week that
Americans spend (in hours) watching TV. For the past couple of years, young
adults have watched less TV per week. This may be because our generation is
digital, therefore most of our news comes from social media; we are constantly
being updated by the minute on what is happening in the world. In a matter of
seconds the world will be updated by a tweet, status, or picture all sent to
our smart phones. Because of our constant updating and tweeting there seems to
be less of a young adult demographic watching TV.
Studies have shown that when young adults are watching TV
most of them are on a second device with the TV playing in the background, a second
device being a smart phone, tablet, or computer. Television shows have now
tried to incorporate a second media outlet during their shows to keep ages
18-24 engaged in their show. Most shows now have a time where you can send in
tweets that could end up on the show, producers have also created exclusives
during a show to enhance the audiences viewing through their second
device. Television has now a bigger
problem than having an audience tune in, now they struggle to keep them from
tuning out.
