A common theme in Korean media is the ever-merging worlds of TV and music. Many mainstream pop stars, such as Kim Hyun Joong, have become the love interests of teens all over Korea and worldwide, through their active presence in the media. This sort of celebrity can be compared to Miley Cyrus as “Hannah Montana” and a little farther back in time, Hilary Duff as “Lizzie McGuire”. What all three of these celebrities have in common is reaching super-stardom through music and TV shows and in some cases, movies. Kim Hyun Joong is the love interest of Jung So-min in the TV series, Playful Kiss. The unexpected twist is that the show, featuring a Korean pop sensation, has an audience that is 70% non-Asian! The show has received no-so-great ratings in Korea, with an average around 4.9% however it tops 7 million viewers in 56 different languages around the world. This exemplifies the influential world of Korean media. Kim Hyun Joong is also the leader of the popular boy-band, SS501. The band has won numerous awards in the country, including 2012’s best Korean band award. Kim Hyun Joong’s solo career has also taken off, putting his album at #5 on billboard’s world chart in 2011. Joong’s success parallels with that of Miley Cyrus in many ways, however, she began as an actress and climbed her way to pop stardom.
The video below is a performance by SS501 of "Because I'm Stupid". The hit song won them 4 awards such as "Song of the Month (February)", "Best OST Award", and "Best TV Drama Song of the Year". The video tops 7 million views worldwide.
