For many years, Americans have been drawn to the genera of reality TV. Steven Reiss, Ph.D., a professor at Ohio State University conducted a study that asked why Americans are so drawn to reality TV. What does it have to offer and why do we connect with it? It seems as though the average person can connect to the common man who appears on these shows. “Reality TV allows Americans to fantasize about gaining status through automatic fame. Ordinary people can watch the shows, see people like themselves and imagine that they too could become celebrities by being on television” says Steven. These shows connect to the desire of a fantasy lifestyle and the chance of becoming famous because you were in the right place at the right time. There is a secret thrill among viewers that they could be the person who rises from a TV show. In a sense being well-known and gaining prosperity from this outlet has become a modern American dream.

Some of the most popular reality TV series have been Temptation Island, Survivor, and The Bachelor/ Bachelorette. Many of the winner on these series have gained fame after completing their season. Some star on talk shows, or are invited to host other shows. Prior to these shows no one knew the contestants, but after the shows gained popularity, contestants rose in status on social media and were able to further their careers in the TV industry. Ali Fedotowsky, former Bachelorette star, is now the host for NBC first look and has hosted for season 6 and 14 on the Bachelorette. Before Ali aired on the ABC reality show she was just like any other girl, but after she has blossomed into a TV personal and host.
